Guiding Principles of the Commission’s Discrimination Prevention Program
The discrimination prevention program’s mandate is to foster a greater understanding of human rights principles, to discourage and eliminate discriminatory practices, and to promote equality. The following principles guide the work of the program:
Active prevention
It is much more effective to put in place practices to prevent discrimination than to deal with it once it has already occurred. Respectful relations are more effective than efforts aimed at resuming broken relations following discriminatory practices. Discrimination prevention substantially reduces the parties’ financial and emotional costs, contrary to corrective action resulting from a human rights complaint.
Strategic partnership
The development of productive partnerships with organizations fosters a healthy climate in the workplace. Employers and service providers are encouraged to adopt principles related to human rights and equality in all their workplace policies and practices.
Customized service
A customized approach for the services provided to organizations are put in place to better respond to issues related to the culture of respect for human rights. Special attention to the needs of each client organization can result in beneficial solutions for both the employers and employees.
Leveraging
Through strategic partnerships with organizations, the CHRC will mobilize and direct the appropriate tools and resources for its clientele, with the goal of helping to improve workplace behaviour.
